RECOGNITION SUMMARY
This Recognition File demonstrates how recognising excessive dependence on brokers transformed customer acquisition and created £35 million (A$70m) in recurring annual revenue within 2½ years.
WPA had become heavily dependent on insurance brokers to generate new business, leaving customer acquisition largely outside its direct control.
By recognising that the real commercial opportunity lay in redesigning distribution rather than improving broker relationships, David introduced and built a national commission-only direct sales operation for WPA. The supporting infrastructure—including recruitment, CRM, commission systems, appointment generation, training and reporting—enabled the organisation to scale with unusual speed and effectiveness.
WPA demonstrated that an established insurer could rapidly build a national commission-only sales organisation supported by integrated commercial systems—challenging the industry's long-standing reliance on broker-led distribution.

Companies accepted high customer churn as a normal cost of doing business.
Beneath the surface, however, several commercial signals were emerging:
The commercial signal wasn't poor sales performance. It was excessive dependence on third-party distribution.

2
RECOGNITION
Rather than asking:
"How can we recruit better brokers?"
David asked:
"Why are we relying on brokers at all?"
That simple question changed everything.
The opportunity wasn't to improve the existing distribution system.
It was to replace it.

3
EVALUATION
A direct sales force would allow WPA to:
The perceived risks were significant.
The commercial opportunity, however, outweighed the perceived risk.

4
COMMERCIAL STRATEGY
The strategy centred on replacing broker dependence with a national commission-only sales organisation.
Key elements included:
The objective wasn't simply growth.
It was ownership of distribution.

5
IMPLEMENTATION
Within twelve months:
The commission-only model proved both scalable and highly profitable
