RECOGNITION SUMMARY
This Recognition File demonstrates how controlling the commercial proposition can create significantly greater value than distributing third-party products.
Although MediTrust had built a successful insurance brokerage managing a substantial portfolio of personal and corporate medical insurance policies, its commercial future remained constrained by dependence upon a single insurer, limited product differentiation and commission structures determined by others.
Rather than attempting to sell more of the same products, the business strategically repositioned itself within the value chain by creating a proprietary insurance product range underwritten through Lloyd's of London syndicates. Combined with a frictionless digital migration process that removed the traditional barriers associated with changing insurance providers, almost the entire client portfolio transferred to the new products within thirty days.
By recognising that ownership of the commercial proposition—not simply ownership of customer relationships—created the greatest commercial leverage, MediTrust fundamentally changed both its profitability and its long-term strategic position.

1
COMMERCIAL SIGNAL
The brokerage market had become increasingly commoditised. Most intermediaries competed using identical products supplied by the same insurers, leaving price and commission as the principal competitive variables. Although MediTrust had successfully built a £4.3 million (A$8.6m) client portfolio, future growth remained heavily dependent upon decisions made by a single insurance provider whose products, pricing and commission structures were largely beyond its control.
The commercial signal wasn't increasing demand for insurance. It was the imbalance between customer ownership and product ownership.

2
RECOGNITION
Rather than asking:
"How do we sell more insurance policies?"
David asked:
"Why are we creating value for someone else's product when we already own the customer relationship?"
That question fundamentally changed the commercial strategy.
Instead of remaining a distributor of third-party insurance products, MediTrust recognised an opportunity to become the owner of the commercial proposition itself. By designing proprietary policies, selecting underwriting partners and controlling the customer experience, the brokerage could capture substantially more value without becoming a regulated insurer.
The Recognition was simple but profound.
Commercial ownership creates greater leverage than commercial distribution..

3
EVALUATION
Owning the commercial proposition fundamentally altered the economics of the business.
Rather than earning commissions determined by external providers, MediTrust would control product design, pricing strategy, customer benefits, branding and future product development while retaining the credibility and regulatory protection provided by Lloyd's underwriting capacity.
The opportunity extended beyond immediate profitability. Greater product control would strengthen customer loyalty, improve lifetime value, create additional recurring income and significantly reduce dependence upon any single supplier.
Most importantly, the existing client base provided an ideal launch platform. The commercial challenge was no longer persuading customers to purchase insurance—it was simply making it easier for them to switch.
The opportunity wasn't selling a different insurance policy. It was repositioning the business within the value chain.

4
COMMERCIAL STRATEGY
The strategy focused on combining product ownership with frictionless customer migration.
A completely new portfolio of medical insurance products was developed offering broader benefits, enhanced customer value and stronger commercial margins. Lloyd's of London syndicates provided underwriting capacity, allowing MediTrust to own the brand, customer proposition and commercial model without assuming insurer regulatory obligations.
Equally important was eliminating the traditional barriers associated with changing providers.
Rather than requiring lengthy application forms and manual administration, customers received personalised invitations allowing them to review and approve their new cover digitally using a simple online process. Additional incentives, including introductory pricing and optional premium upgrades, further encouraged migration while increasing average customer value.

5
IMPLEMENTATION
The proprietary products were introduced alongside a carefully planned migration campaign targeting the existing client portfolio.
Customers received personalised communications explaining the enhanced benefits available under the new product range together with a simple digital approval process requiring only minimal customer input. Existing policy information was used to streamline administration, allowing customers to complete the transfer quickly and with minimal disruption.
Operational systems were coordinated to support rapid implementation, policy issuance and customer servicing while maintaining continuity of cover throughout the transition. Upsell opportunities were incorporated into the migration process, enabling customers to select enhanced levels of protection where appropriate.
By removing complexity from what had traditionally been viewed as an inconvenient process, switching became easier than remaining with the existing arrangements.

6
RESULTS
Created a scalable commercial platform capable of supporting future product innovation and expansion.
MediTrust demonstrated that the greatest commercial value wasn't created by distributing products, it was created by owning the commercial proposition behind them.
